Vagal afferents coordinate a diversity of physiological and behavioral functions.
Description
Vagal afferents directly project to the caudal NTS region of the brainstem,
where interoceptive signals are integrated and transmitted to other regions of the brain to coordinate behaviors such as feeding and drinking, or regulate cognition such as emotion and memory. The vagal sensory information can also modulate the physiological functions of peripheral organs, such as GI motility, energy homeostasis or barrier immunity.
