Types of cell cultures in environmental studies
Description
Two-dimensional (2D) cell cultures involve growing cells as a single layer on a flat surface, while three-dimensional (3D) cell cultures create a 3D environment that more closely mimics the architecture and conditions found in living tissues. 3D cell cultures can be categorized into three groups: scaffold-based (e.g., scaffolds, hydrogels, 3D bioprinting), scaffold-free (e.g., spheroids, organoids), and hybrid culture systems (e.g., organotypic raft culture, organ-on-a-chip).
