The extent of β-cell injury determines the regenerative route.
Description
The extent of β-cell number decline in diabetes generates as yet unidentified signals that determine the regenerative mechanism(s) taken. During β-cell loss progression, ranging from mild to moderate and severe, surviving β-cells serve as the primary source for regeneration through β-cell replication and/or
redifferentiation. Only in instances of extreme β-cell injury are non-β-cell sources addressed and neogenesis from progenitor cells and/or reprogramming from non-β-cells occurs.
