The destruction of pancreatic β-cells by cell-mediated immunity and antibody-mediated immunity
Description
(1) β-cell receptor of the β-cell accepts the autoantigen. These peptides are bound by MHC and are presented to T-cells for recognition by the T-cell receptor. T-cell is activated and with the secretion of cytokines, cytotoxic T cells are stimulated. (2) auto-antibodies produced by β-cells attack antigens expressed on the surface of pancreatic beta cells. Regular cellular processes are disrupted. Both pathways (1 & 2), lead to pancreatic β-cell apoptosis and a decreased insulin secretion.
