Telomere length: Hallmark of a cancer and aging
Description
Critical telomere shortening due to cell division triggers a DNA damage response. This activates tumor suppressor proteins, leading to either cell cycle arrest (senescence) or cell death (apoptosis). Senescence contributes to aging. Concurrently, damaged proteins alongside shortened telomeres cause genetic instability, fostering cancerous cells.
