Solar cycle, central and peripheral circadian clock
Description
The solar cycle is coupled with organismal feeding/fasting and wake/sleep cycle. Organismal active/rest cycles are coupled with a central CNS circadian clock in the suprachiasmatic nucleus through light stimulation of the retina. The central clock stimulates pituitary release of ACTH which increases circulating cortisol that synchronizes individual cellular peripheral clocks found in virtually all tissues.
