Role of Funny Channels in Cardiac Pacemaker Activity

Description

The "funny" channels are cAMP-gated channels that allow the cardiac pacemaker membrane current to "float" upwards until threshold is reached. The αi subunit of the muscarinic acetylcholine receptor-associated G protein inhibits the formation of cAMP and the membrane potential "floats" upward more slowly. The αs subunit of the β-adrenergic receptor stimulates the formation of cAMP and the membrane potential "floats" upward more quickly.
