Primary and secondary neural injury
Description
Primary neural injury results from immediate mechanical damage to neural tissues, while secondary injury involves biochemical, cellular, and molecular cascades that exacerbate damage post-insult. Examples include direct trauma in primary injury (e.g., contusions in TBI) and processes like ischemia, excitotoxicity, inflammation, and oxidative stress in secondary injury, crucial for developing effective therapeutic interventions and improving patient outcomes.
