Pathological Vascular Changes in Diabetic Retinopathy
Description
This template was adapted from the original submission. Edits were made to enhance scientific accuracy, optimal usability and/or to meet industry-leading design standards for science communication.
In normal intact retinal vessels, blood flow is regular and the vascular configuration is stable. However, in diabetic retinopathy, changes occur to the vasculature including loss of endothelial tight junctions, pericyte detachment, pericyte ghosts formation, basement membrane thickening, and at later stages abnormal neovascularization with the formation of new unstable vessels.
