Novel Pharmacotherapies for Diabetic Macular Edema (DME)

Description

This template was adapted from the original submission. Edits were made to enhance scientific accuracy, optimal usability and/or to meet industry-leading design standards for science communication. Diabetic macular edema (DME) is the leading cause of vision loss in diabetic patients and is characterized by increased intraocular pressure and abnormal vessel growth in retinal area. Hyperglycemia in diabetes leads to up-regulation of inflammatory factors, and induces the breakdown of the blood-retinal barrier and fluid accumulation, ultimately causing macular swelling. This figure provides an overview of novel therapeutic strategies targeting different signaling pathways involved in the pathogenesis of DME.
