Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) Spectrum
Description
The non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) spectrum represents a progressive liver disease beginning with a healthy liver and advancing through several stages. The first stage, fat stays in <5% of hepatocytes. The second stage, non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL), is characterized by Steatosis with liver fat accumulation in hepatocytes > 5%. Further progression may lead to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which involves inflammation, ballooning, and fibrosis. NASH can advance to cirrhosis, resulting in irreversible liver scarring, fibrosis and organ failure. Cirrhotic livers are at a higher risk for hepatocellular carcinoma, potentially necessitating liver transplant or causing death. [Adapted from GPT4, 2023]
