Lipid Handling in the Small Intestine Modulates Immune System Homeostasis
Description
This template was adapted from the original submission. Edits were made to enhance scientific accuracy, optimal usability and/or to meet industry-leading design standards for science communication.
The handling of lipids at the small intestine can affect inflammation in the body. ① Fatty acids are absorbed at the apical membrane of the small intestine enterocyte and are packaged into chylomicrons. The chylomicrons are secreted into the same physiological space where gut immune cells reside. ② Lymphocytes and chylomicrons travel through the lymphatic system and arrive at the mesenteric lymph node during fat absorption. Antigen presentation activates lymphocytes. ③ Immune cells exit the lymphatics and travel throughout the body to regulate inflammation.
