Inhibitory neurotransmission in the internal anal sphincter
Description
Inhibitory neurotransmitters in the internal anal sphincter include nitric oxide (NO) and purines. When released from inhibitory neurons, NO targets Interstitial Cells of Cajal, whereas purines target PDGFRa+ cells. Cells in the IAS act as a coupled syncytium, therefore, changes in one cell type will dictate the activity of smooth muscle in the IAS leading to relaxation
