Immune response following traumatic brain injury (TBI)
Description
The primary mechanical injury leads to cell death and microglial and astrocytic activation.
Chemokines, cytokines, reactive oxygen species, and DAMPs, set off an inflammatory response. Phagocytic microglia engage in debris clearance and synthesize neurotrophic agents. Progression of inflammation and disruption of the BBB. This cascade drives a self-perpetuating cycle of neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration.
