An editable high resolution scientific image depicting Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) Axis Dysregulation in PTSD

Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) Axis Dysregulation in PTSD

Description

Individuals with PTSD tend to display sustained or elevated levels of CRH in response to stress or trauma, leading to a blunted ACTH response to CRH stimulation, decreased secretion of ACTH, and impaired release of cortisol. The lower-than-normal cortisol levels, known as hypocortisolism, further dysregulate the negative feedback mechanism of the HPA axis. Individuals with PTSD often exhibit hypocortisolism, heightened negative feedback sensitivity in the HPA axis.
