HIF-1a Oncogenic pathway under hypoxic conditions
Description
In normoxic conditions, HIF-1α is degraded by the von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) E3 ubiquitin ligase complex. But under hypoxia, this breakdown process is inhibited, allowing HIF-1α to form complex with HIF-1β, creating a powerful molecular duo. This duo binds to specific DNA regions termed HREs. Once bound, the complex activates genes that are involved in tumorigenesis, such as cell proliferation, energy metabolism, angiogenesis, immune evasion, metastasis and drug resistance.
