GVHD
Description
In GVHD Phase I, recipient conditioning causes tissue damage and inflammatory cytokine release, leading to host APC activation. Phase II sees these APCs activate donor cells, whose proliferation and differentiation into CTLs, NK cells, and more cytokines intensify tissue damage. LPS from intestinal leaks exacerbates TNFα production, which directly harms tissues via necrosis and apoptosis, particularly in the GI tract, amplifying a damaging "cytokine storm."
