Extracellular Vesicle Biogenesis and Characterization
Description
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) originate from several biogenesis pathways, including from inward budding of endosomal membranes (exosomes), outward protrusions of the plasma membrane (ectosomes/microvesicles), and programmed fragmentation during cell death (apoptosis). EVs carry protein, nucleic acids, and lipids both on the surface and/or within their lumens. EVs are commonly defined by physical and functional properties including size, cellular origin, cargoes, and function.
