Endometriosis overview
Description
Endometriosis is a disease of the female reproductive system in which endometrial cells grow outside the uterus and form inflammatory and painful lesions. All organs in the peritoneal cavity can be affected including uterus, gut, bladder as well as the abdominal wall. During the menstruation cycle, endometrial lesions will thicken, break down and bleed as well. However the the tissue has no way to exit and remains in the peritoneal cavity, resulting in inflammation and scarring.
