Direct and Indirect Pathways of the Basal Ganglia
Description
This template was adapted from the original submission. Edits were made to enhance scientific accuracy, optimal usability and/or to meet industry-leading design standards for science communication.
Direct pathway (DP): thalamus is disinhibited & increases excitatory feedback to the motor cortex. Indirect pathway (IP): thalamus is inhibited & decreases excitatory feedback to the motor cortex. The internal/external globus pallidus (GPi/GPe) sends inhibitory feedback to the thalamus. The subthalamic nucleus (STN) sends excitatory feedback to the GPi. Dopaminergic inputs from the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) inhibit the IP via dopamine receptor 2 (D2) & activate the DP via D1.
