This diagram is a schematic representation of the laser photocoagulation treatment. Laser photocoagulation represents the gold standard in advanced stages of diabetic retinopathy, where neovascularization, mainly at the optic nerve level, is compromising vision. To stop the abnormal vessel growth and to reduce already formed neovessels, the damaged retina is treated with a laser that generates spots on the tissue.
