Diabetic Retinopathy Hallmarks
Description
This template was adapted from the original submission. Edits were made to enhance scientific accuracy, optimal usability and/or to meet industry-leading design standards for science communication.
The diagram shows the main features of advanced diabetic retinopathy in the human eye. Late-stage diabetic retinopathy is characterized by retinal vessels weakening with aneurysm formation, and leakage from vessels in the form of hard exudates, "cotton-wool" spots, and blot hemorrhage. Additionally, abnormal neovascularization is observed as a compensatory mechanism of hypoxia that characterizes diabetic eye disease.
