Cardiopulmonary bypass in cardiac surgery
Description
Cardiopulmonary bypass is a machine that temporarily takes over the function of the heart and lungs during a cardiac surgery by mechanically circulating and oxygenating blood throughout the patient's body. The venous cannula (blue) on the right atrial appendege removes oxygen depleted venous blood from the body, and the arterial cannula (red) on the aorta infuses oxygen-rich blood into the arterial system.
