Adult neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus

Description

The dentate gyrus (DG) of the adult brain of mice (and of most mammals, including young humans) hosts a niche of neural stem cells (NSCs), specifically located in the subgranular zone (SGZ), just below the granule cell layer (GCL) made of granule neurons. When quiescent NSCs starts proliferating (activated NSC), they generate a pool of intermediate progenitors, some of which will survive and differentiate into mature granule neurons that will incorporate in the pre-existing neuronal network.
