A schematic depiction of the gut microenvironment.
Description
The gut luminal content is wrapped by layers of delicate structures, including the epithelium, lamina propria, submucosal plexus, muscularis, myenteric plexus, and serosa. Vagal sensory neurons form specialized terminals at different layers of the gut wall, including mucosal endings beneath the epithelium, IMAs within the muscularis, and IGLEs within the myenteric plexus.
