A general model illustrating p97/VCP mechanism of action
Description
p97, aided by ubiquitin-binding cofactors (E1, E2, E3), remodels ubiquitinated substrates through ATP hydrolysis, facilitating their segregation from cellular structures. Interactions with ubiquitin-editing enzymes, like E4 chain extension factors or deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs), further regulate substrate fate, influencing either degradation or recycling pathways.
