6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) Rodent Model of Parkinson's Disease
Description
To model the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons (DANs) in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) during Parkinson's disease, rodents are given a medial forebrain bundle (MFB)-targeted injection of the neurotoxin 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA), which selectively targets DANs by entering dopamine transporters (DAT) and causing oxidative stress. Approximately three weeks after injection, the 6-OHDA-lesioned hemisphere will exhibit a significant loss of DANs in the SNc.
