Organization of rRNA Genes in Eukaryotes
Description
The figure shows that the nucleolus organizer region (NOR) of eukaryotic chromosomes contains multiple clusters of tandemly repeated rRNA genes. In humans, the rRNA genes are present in two loci: the 45S rDNA locus and the 5S rDNA locus. The 45S rDNA locus contains genes for the 18S, 5.8S, and 28S rRNAs, whereas the 5S rDNA locus contains genes for the 5S rRNA.
